The Cyclades archipelago consists of 56 islands and islets in the Aegean Sea, of which 33 are inhabited. The word "kyklos" means circle and this is exactly what they are: a circle formed around the sacred island of Delos. The capital of the island group is Ermoupoli on the island of Syros. The islands have a rich history and are known for the Cycladic culture (3000-1000 BC), of which relics are to be found on almost all Cyclades. In history many different rulers have populated the islands, from the Persians around 500 BC, the Romans, the Byzantines, the Venetians, and the Ottomans to the Germans in World War II. Today the islands with their quaint, traditional villages, snow-white houses, many attractions, and beaches are an attractive holiday paradise, where each island has to offer you something different.
