Literally Dodecanese means '12 islands', but there are many more. In fact 37, spread across the south-eastern part of the Aegean Sea. Geologists claim that these islands are the peaks of the Aegaeis mountains that once connected Greece with Asia and sank in the Mediterranean Sea millions years ago. Rhodes is the capital of the archipelago. On the island of Patmos John would have written his revelations. Kalymnos is the island of the sponge fishermen and on Kos was the first hospital of Europe located around 300 BC., founded by Hippocrates, who is also known for the medical oath named after him. The islands are ideal for island hopping and offer a lot of variety. From the cosmopolitan atmosphere of Rhodes and Kos to almost undiscovered islands, such as Kastelorizo, Agathonissi and Lipsi.
