In the north of the Aegean Sea, between Greece and Turkey are the North Aegean islands. The most famous are Lesvos, Samos, and Chios but Thasos, Samothrace, Lemnos, Ikaria, and Fourni belong to this island group as well. Closer to the mainland of Greece but also in the northern Aegean Sea, are the Sporades: Alonissos, Evia, Skiathos, Skopelos, and Skyros. Characteristic of all these islands is the exuberant green. The islands are very fertile and provide the majority of the olives and fruits of Greece. These islands have been inhabited since prehistoric times and have known many different inhabitants who have all left their mark. Although tourists have discovered this area decades ago, these islands are generally quieter and more authentic. You will find no major tourist centres and no skyscraper hotels.
